Under the gaze of a white dwarf star, temperatures and UV levels are orders of magnitude greater than survivable except from brief respite at night. Life on Nocturne instead evolved under the surface of the planet, protected from the harshness of the light.

Without easily being able to exploit natural resources, and living in darkened caverns, Nocturni are both highly observant and resourceful. They make excellent problem solvers, quick-thinkers and intelligence-gatherers.

Nocturne

Nocturne is a world shaped by extremes. The surface is scorched beneath the relentless blaze of a white dwarf star known as Noctex, its crust fractured by millions of years of violent thermal stress. Daytime temperatures soar to instant-fatal levels, and ultraviolet radiation pours across the barren plains in blinding sheets of white fire. Only at night does the surface settle into a brief span of survivability, but even then the ground remains searing and the air thin and metallic. Life on Nocturne instead evolved beneath its surface, hidden away in caverns where the fury of Noctex could not reach.

The subterranean cradle of Nocturni civilization is a world of perpetual twilight, illuminated by faint mineral phosphorescence and the soft glow of bioluminescent flora. Here, ecosystems thrive in the shadows: fungal forests spreading across cavern floors, blind insectoid fauna scuttling along the walls, and geothermal vents sustain pockets of warmth and moisture. This is the environment in which Nocturni survives – adapted to darkness, sensitive to sound, vibration, and the subtlest shifts in their surroundings. Their society was forged in tight, enclosed spaces where cooperation, sharp perception and constant innovation are key to their survival.

Culture

Resource scarcity shaped the Nocturni into a people who waste nothing and repurpose everything. Metals are painstakingly extracted from deep mineral veins, water is recycled through complex purification systems, and entire industries are devoted to crafting tools, machinery, and shelters from natural cavern materials. The need to constantly assess danger, identify solutions, and adapt quickly led to a culture that prioritises intelligence, observation, and versatility. Even in their ancient myths, heroes are celebrated not for brute strength, but for cunning, invention, and mastery of the unseen.

When the Nocturni eventually reached spacefaring capability, the wider galaxy was struck by their inherent discipline and perceptiveness. They make exceptional analysts, scouts, and intelligence operatives as their keen senses help them to read patterns, anticipate outcomes and maintain composure under pressure. Yet despite expanding among the stars, the Nocturni retain a quiet reverence for the dark caverns of their origin. Returning to Nocturne’s depths is a reaffirmation of identity in a universe often overwhelmed by light.

Due to their biological intolerance to harsh illumination, Nocturni abroad are instantly recognisable, when cloaked in layered hoods, shaded lenses and protective garments designed to shield their sensitive skin and eyes. These protections are necessary for adaptation and survival.
